Currents’ Physical Components (CPC) – based power theory of electrical systems with nonsinusoidal and asymmetrical voltages and currents: Present state and future of the power theory


Leszek S. Czarnecki,  IEEE Life Fellow,  Alfredo M. Lopez Distinguished Professor at Louisiana State University,  Titled Professor of Technological Sciences of Poland,  granted by the President of Poland. He received the M.Sc.,  Ph.D. and Habilitation Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Silesian University of Technology,  Poland,  in 1963,  1969 and 1984,  respectively. Beginning in 1984 he worked for two years at the Power Engineering Section,  Division of Electrical Engineering,  National Research Council (NRC) of Canada as a Research Officer. In 1987 he joined the Electrical Engineering Dept. at Zielona Gora University of Technology,  Poland. In 1989 Dr. Czarnecki joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of Louisiana State University,  Baton Rouge. For developing a power theory of three-phase systems with nonsinusoidal and unbalanced voltages and currents and for methods of compensation of such systems he was elected to the grade of Fellow IEEE in 1996. Dr. Czarnecki was decorated for a public activity by the President of Poland with the Knight Cross of the Medal of Merit of the Republic of Poland. He was nominated to the IEEE Proteus Charles Steinmetz Award. Involved in mountaineering and underwater photography. He claimed Lhotse (No. 4 of the World) in Himalayas (8350m); the main ridge of Ruwenzori in East Africa (19 summits of average high of 5000m),  Kilimanjaro and Mt. Kenya; traversed on ski (500km) Spitsbergen in deep Arctic; claimed in Alps and in Andes; claimed solo McKinley,  the highest mountain in North America.

Abstract of Lecture:


Peter Werle studied electrical engineering at the University of Hannover and made afterwards his PhD at the Schering-Insitute in Hannover.

From 2003 to 2014 he was with ABB Transformer Serice in different national and international positions. From 2010 to 2014 he was the general manager of the Transformer Service in Germany and responsible for the service workshops in Halle (Saale), Neusäss (close to Augsburg) and Nauen (close to Berlin) with over 200 employees.

Since October 2014 he is the director of the Schering-Institute for High Voltage Engineering and Asset Management of the Leibniz University in Hannover.

He is Member of the VDE, IEEE, DKE K 182 and active in CIGRÉ as Liaison officer A2-IEC TC 10,as well as in the Advisory Group AG A2.4 and in different CIGRÉ Working Groups. He is inventor of more than 20 patents and is author or co-author or more than 200 publications in the area of Asset Management, Condition Monitoring,Partial Discharge Diagnosis and High Voltage Testing.

The Emerging Wireless Technology of LiFi


Abstract of Lecture:

The current radio frequency based wireless technology is experiencing a surge in the data traffic mostly driven by the wide spread use of smart devices,  thus leading to what is known as frequency spectrum congestion. One possible complementary solution to address the spectrum congestion and thus release the pressure on the radio frequency spectrum is to shift to the optical frequency bands including the visible spectrum. In the last decade we have seen a growing research interest and activities in the emerging field of LiFi (or Visible Light Communications) for indoor and outdoor applications,which utilises white light emitting diodes based lighting fixtures that are highly energy efficient and have a very high switching speed compared to the traditional light sources. LED based lights offer features such as data communications,  localization and sensing. This talk will give an overview of LiFi systems, why the need for it,  the main features,  type of light sources and detectors,  fundamental concept,  applications and key challenges that is facing this green technology. The talk will also cover the recent research and development in the field,  as well as key challenges currently facing LiFi.

Zabih Ghassemlooy received the B.Sc. degree (Hons.) in electrical and electronics engineering from Manchester Metropolitan University,  Manchester,  U.K.,  in 1981,  and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the Institute of Science and Technology,  Manchester,  University of Manchester,U.K.,  in 1984 and 1987,  respectively. From 1987 to 1988,  he was a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow with City University,  U.K. In 1988,  he joined Sheffield Hallam University as a Lecturer,  becoming a Reader in 1995 and a Professor in optical communications in 1997. In 2004,  he joined the University of Northumbria (UNN),  Newcastle,  as an Associate Dean (AD) for research with the School of Computing,  Engineering,and Information Sciences,  and from 2012 to 2014,  he was AD of Research and Innovation,Faculty of Engineering,  UNN,  UK,  where he currently is Head of the Northumbria Communications Research Laboratories within the faculty. In 2001 he was a recipient of the Tan Chin Tuan Fellowship in Engineering from the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. In 2016 he become a Research Fellow at the Chines Academy of Science,  and since 2015 has been a Distinguished Professor with the Chinese Academy of Sciences,  Quanzhou,China. He is a Visiting Professor at the University Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia,  Malaysia (2013-2017),  and Huaqiao University,  Quanzhou,  China (2017-18). He has authored over 675 papers (over 251 journals and 6 books),over 86 keynote and invited talks,  and has supervised 55 Ph.D. students. His current research interests include optical wireless communications,  free space optics,and visible light communications. He was the Vice-Chair of EU Cost Action IC1101 (2011-16). He is the Chief Editor of the British Journal of Applied Science and Technology and the International Journal of Optics and Applications. He has been quest editor of a number of special issues in IEEE and IET journals. He is the fellow of the IET,  a senior member of IEEE,and a member of OSA. He is a co-author of a CRC book on “Optical Wireless Communications – Systems and Channel Modelling with Matlab (2012); and co-editor of three books including the Springer book on “Optical Wireless Communications – An Emerging Technology (2016)”,  and IET book on “Analogue Optical Fibre Communications,IEE Telecommunication series 32,  1995”. He is the founder and the Chairman of the IEEE,  IET International Symposium on Communication Systems,  Network and Digital Signal Processing. He is the Chair of colloquium on Optical Wireless Communications (OWC) as part of the IEE/IET CSNDSP symposium since 2008,  organizer/co-organizer of the workshop on OWC IEEE ICC (2015,  16,  and 17),  and the Chair of colloquium on OWC as part of the IEE/IET CSNDSP symposium since 2008,  and a number of international colloquiums/workshops. From 2004-06 he was the IEEE UK/IR Communications Chapter Secretary,  the Vice-Chairman (2004-2008),  the Chairman (2008-2011),and Chairman of the IET Northumbria Network (Oct 2011-2015).

Tomographic Imaging,  challenges and opportunities


Abstract of Lecture:

My team in ETL works in a wide range of areas in tomographic imaging. We work in tomographic image reconstruction algorithm and tomographic imaging system and sensor development. The work in extended in many application areas such as medical imaging and industrial process tomography,  landmine detection,  smart water-metering,  subsea sonar imaging with applications in oil and gas exploration. In this talk we present scientific challenges and opportunities in various application areas. We present new and emerging tomography systems such as electromagnetic induction tomography,  electrical impedance tomography,  and electrical capacitance tomography. We will also present our state of the art tomographic imaging software TIGRE jointly developed and freely released together with CERN in X-ray CT. Through collaboration with CERN we will develop new solutions for motion correction lung imaging for radiation therapy. We will present potential cooperation opportunities.


Manuchehr Soleimani received the B.Sc. degreein electrical engineering and the M.Sc. degree in biomedical engineering from the Sharif University of Technology,  Tehran,  Iran,  in 1996 and 1999,  respectively,  and the Ph.D. degree in inverse problems and electromagnetic tomography from the University of Manchester,  Manchester,  U.K., in 2005. From 2005 to 2007,  he was a Research Associate with the School of Materials,  University of Manchester,  where he developed a range of wearable devices and biomedical textile. Since 2007,  he has been with the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering,  University of Bath,  Bath,  U.K.,  where he was first a Research Associate and has been a Lecturer since 2008. He has authored more than 150 journal papers,  reviewpapers,  book chapters,  and papers in conference proceedings. He is the holderof several patents. He has edited three special issues in journals and is serving as an editorial board member of five scientific journals.
